College acceptance letters can weigh
more than rejection letters if they contain the financial aid package
too. Most colleges
need a commitment from you by
May 1. This gives you only a few
weeks to sift through offers,
compare, and-if
possible-negotiate them with the college Financial Aid Officers to improve
them. This document
will list the cost of one year's attendance at the
college as well as what the college
decided you could afford to pay
toward that cost. Most importantly,
it will spell out the combination of
grants, loans, and work-study aid
that the college has determined you
are eligible to receive.
NOTE: Ignore Work Study
funds since you must earn them throughout the year! You won't
have that money up front to pay when the tuition bill is due.
Also, be careful of loans listed for which you haven't even applied
or considered. Just cross them off and only add a loan back to
the list later if you actually apply for and receive one.
